For years system engineers have envisioned “smart cables” that could reduce wire counts via multiplexing, and provide early prediction of failure modes. Until now, the required technologies were not available for cost-effective implementation. Northeastern Electronics Co., Inc., a U.S. company specializing in cable and wire harness design and manufacturing for more than 30 years, has begun to implement these powerful technologies in its expanding line of OEM product offerings.
The patented SmartKable™ product suite consists of five (5) modular offerings that may be implemented independently or in conjunction with one another.
The SmartConnect™, SmartStrain™, SmartShield™, and SmartKink™ modules provide robust early detection of impending cable failure. The SmartMux™ module multiplexes signals onto a single high-speed serial link to dramatically reduce the number of interconnects, and the overall weight and size of the wire harness. The microelectronic engine required to perform all of these functions is a field programmable gate array (FPGA). This ultra low power solution requires minimal support hardware, allowing it to reside within a “standardized” connector backshell.
